Music Review: Ariana Grande - Focus (Single) 7/10

Ariana Grande is well known for her infectious pop songs with huge hits such as Bang Bang and Problem and long time fans will remember Grande's beautiful ballads from 2013. Grande is an artist who grew and changed very quickly adapting to what the world wanted, what would make her a success; which is something that I have always liked about her as an artist. Grande is not afraid of change and she is constantly evolving and pushing the boundaries.

With two popular albums under her belt, Grande is introducing us to her third with "Focus"

With this album her look has evolved slightly with the grey white hair but everything else stays the same, the same pink colour scheme, the same crop tops and leotards. I like this. I like that she has developed her look, creating a memorable theme for the song/album while still keeping a clear "Ariana Grande" style. I expected the same from the song, a clear "Ariana Grande" style with with a memorable development. But, unfortunately this isn't the case.

"Focus" is an upbeat pop song with a retro feel and a trumpet feature. Sound familiar? Yeah, I basically just described "Problem" and a lot of Grande's other songs.

The chorus to "Focus" is a mans voice shouting "focus on me" over and over again much like the male voice whispering "one less problem with out ya" during the chorus for "Problem". The two songs are built so similarly, now don't get wrong, I loved "Problem" so it would be hard for me not to like "Focus" too but I just feel cheated, like I'm being given the same material again.

Ultimately, Grande has not progressed with this single. It is a good song and if "Problem" had never been released I would probably love it but they are just too similar and I'm let down to be honest.

I also think the male voice would have been better if it was a known feature artist, Will i am maybe?
